What Should Feature on Drive to Survive Season 5

Love it or hate it, Drive to Survive is back. With the release of its fifth season coming 24th February, it’s got me thinking about what we could hope to see…

Sebastian Vettel

The end of the season was an emotional one, with four time world champion Sebastian Vettel retiring from Formula 1. The grid will be missing a true icon when the season starts in Bahrain so it seems only right that we get an episode dedicated to him and his incredible career.

Oscar Piastri Twitter Drama

After one of the most dramatic moments in F1 unfolded over the summer break, everyone knew the name Oscar Piastri. With Vettel announcing his retirement on his long awaited Instagram account, Fernando Alonso burnt his bridges with Alpine and decided to take the Aston Martin seat. Left with an empty space, Alpine “promoted” Piastri to a full time race seat and told the world before they told Oscar himself! It was a crazy few days in the F1 community and one that deserves its own episode (I’m also hoping the netflix cameras were with Alpine when that tweet went live).

Max Verstappen

If you have watched the short preview released by Netflix then you will have seen Max Verstappen taking a seat in the interview chair. He has previously lashed out at the Netflix series saying they create fictional story lines and make more out of issues than the reality (he has a point), however it seems that season 5 will mark his return. Let’s hope Netflix take the opportunity to show us a behind the scenes of his second championship and not create drama that will drive him away again!

Mercedes downfall

What a season it was for the 8 time constructors champions, Mercedes. After years of domination, the Brackley based team slipped down the grid and ended the season in third. Whether or not you are a Merc fan, you cannot doubt the drive that this team have and their commitment to getting back on top. It would be great to see the behind the scenes of the team as they worked through one of their toughest seasons for a while.

Haas and K-Mag

If someone had told me at the start of the season that K-Mag was going to get a pole position, there is no way I would have believed them (K-Mag didn’t even have a seat at Haas this time last year!). Even Haas had not prepared themselves for this moment as it was pretty obvious that the pole position graphic on social media had been made in the 8 minutes waiting in the garage for Q3 to end. Gunter Steiner is already the star of the show when it comes to Netflix and, now they have an actual story line to follow, I hope to see the Steiner Ship upgraded to a full on Cruise Liner.

Silverstone and Brazil

Both of these races had their own craziness, be it good or bad, that warrants them having an episode of their own on Drive to Survive. At Silverstone we saw a debut race win in Sainz, the hideous crash from Zhou that also saw Albon in hospital and the protestors on track (do not go and sit on an F1 track). Brazil was probably the best overall race weekend with another debut race win, this time from Russell, and a pole position that we did not see coming from K-Mag?! If these races do not feature on Drive to Survive then I will be very disappointed.
